Availability
Mscdex or mscdexnt are external commands that are available for the following versions of Microsoft operating systems as mscdex.exe or mscdexnt.exe.
Mscdex syntax
/D:Device name | Allows you to specify the name for the driver. This device name must be identical to the device name in the config.sys file. Usually, MSCD0001 is commonly used. |
/M:<n> | Specifies the number of sector buffers to cache the path table of a CD-ROM disk. Each drive should have four to five buffers. The larger this number is, the less your computer will read directly from the CD-ROM drive. |
/E | Tells MSCDEX.exe to use expanded memory. |
/V | Displays information on memory usage when you boot your PC. |
/L:<drive letter> | Specifies the drive letter you want to assign the first CD-ROM drive. Such as D: |
/S | Allows the CD-ROM to be shared on MS-NET based systems. |
/K (Japanese) | Tells MSCDEX.EXE to use any KANJI file structures if present rather than the default of alphanumeric file structures. |
Extra notes
When loading the MSCDEX line in Windows 3.x, make sure to define the LASTDRIVE= statement with a line similar to 'LASTDRIVE=Z' line.
Mscdex examples
Below is an example of how the MSCDEX line should look in your autoexec.bat:
Windows Cd Rom Driver
Remember that if you use the example above must have the same device driver name as the CD-ROM driver in the config.sys.

Errors and issues
Download Icloud For Windows
When booting, I receive the message 'MSCDEX is already running,' and if I continue, all programs stop running.
It's likely you have more than one MSCDEX statement in your autoexec.bat. Edit the autoexec.bat and place a REM in front of one of the MSCDEX lines in the autoexec.bat.

To refresh the CD and DVD drivers list in the Windows registry:
Important: After you refresh the driver list in the Windows registry, you may need to reinstall any other CD or DVD burning applications on your computer. If you restart Windows after this procedure and other CD or DVD burning applications do not recognize the CD or DVD drive, then reinstall those applications.
- Open Registry Editor:
- On Windows 2000 and XP: Choose Start > Run. Type regedit in the Open text box and click OK.
- On Windows Vista: Choose Start. Type regedit in the Search text box, and press Enter.
- In the left pane of Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass and select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} key, which appears as a folder.
- Select File > Export (Windows XP and Vista) or Registry > Export Registry File (Windows 2000).
- In the Export Registry File dialog box, select Selected Branch under Export Range, name the file (for example, CDDVDkey.reg), and click Save to save the file to the Desktop.
- In the right panel of the Registry Editor, select the LowerFilters line, and then choose Edit > Delete. Click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box.
- Select the UpperFilters line, and then choose Edit > Delete. Click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box.
- Open Device Manager:
- On Windows 2000 and XP: Choose Start > Control Panel. Double-click the System icon, click on the Hardware Tab, then click on Device Manager.
- On Windows Vista: Choose Start > Control Panel, double-click System, then click Device Manager in the Tasks pane.
- Click on the plus symbol next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
- For each DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive listed, select the icon then choose Action > Uninstall.
- Windows will automatically detect and reinstall your DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drives. You can verify that the drives are installed by viewing them in Device Manager (see step 9). If the drives are not present, open Device Manger and choose Actions > Scan For Hardware Changes.
Important: If this solution doesn't resolve the problem with the application you reinstalled, then you should restore the CD and DVD drivers list in the Windows registry.

The Adobe Captivate demonstration below illustrates how to refresh the CD and DVD drivers list in the registry.
The UpperFilters and LowerFilters keys in the Windows registry store information about CD and DVD burning drivers. When you add or remove CD and DVD burning applications, these registry keys are altered and they can become corrupted. When you remove the registry keys and restart the computer, Windows refreshes the keys. Some applications may use a different burning driver than the application you reinstalled. If the other CD or DVD burning applications installed on your computer cannot access the drive after Windows refreshes the registry keys, you will need to reinstall those applications before they can access the drive.
